The Country Club Plaza in Kansas City is a premiere outdoor shopping area. As visitors walk around this 15 block shopping district they will see towers, fountains, statues, and mosaics that were inspired by Seville, Spain. Doorways, windows, balconies, and lamps also add to the ambiance with their old world architectural details.
It’s not just the architecture that creates a fashionable feeling. The Country Club Plaza has many of the best stores in the US. Tiffany & Co, Mark Shale, Chico’s, Anthropologie, Pottery Barn, and Restoration Hardware are just a few. There are also a number of stores specializing in technology including Bang & Olufsen, Sharper Image, Sony Style, and the new Apple Computer store.
You’re sure to work up an appetite shopping or just from smelling the delightful aromas drifting out of the cafes and restaurants. The Plaza has many nice places to eat out, ranging from steakhouses to Italian to Mexican. Some of the more popular options are The Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Buca di Beppo, Brio Tuscan Grille, Houston’s; and if you really like fast food (or your budget needs a break) there is even a McDonald’s.
The one disappointment I have with the Plaza is the lack of good coffeehouses. There is, of course, a Starbucks, but it is usually over crowded. The other coffeehouses look generic and offer mediocre coffee, like the kind of places you might find at an airport.
Minneapolis has its Nicolette Mall Street, San Antonio its River Walk, and Chicago its Magnificent Mile. And in the heart of the Midwest, Kansas City has its County Club Plaza. The place in KC to see and be seen, just don’t expect to find a descent coffeehouse–for that you should drive the 15-20 minutes to the Caribou Coffeehouse in Leawood.
